Since 1979

The natural hairstyle, born out of necessity

Since 1979, one conviction has remained unchanged: to take care of hair without ever lying about what goes into it. That year, Martine Mahé created the first natural hair dye without henna, Teinture aux Plantes. Today, this formula is passed on to those who keep it alive.

Our history

Almost 50 years, one conviction

1969

The Green Living Room®

On Rue Vignon, in the heart of Paris’s 8th arrondissement, Martine Mahé is opening a pioneering natural hair salon where plant-based dyes and botanical treatments replace chemicals.

1979

Herbal Dye

After an allergic reaction to conventional hair products, she was introduced in Switzerland by a chemist to an original herbal hair dye formula that combines color with hair care.

A strong presence

Distribution extends well beyond salons: health food stores, herbalist shops, and parapharmacies have made the brand a leading name in natural hair care in France.

The transmission

Martine Mahé chooses the person to whom she entrusts her inheritance, convinced that he will know how to preserve the soul of the house.

Reformulation

A supply imperative is driving a reformulation of Plant-Based Dye. The conditioning ingredients are redesigned to be up to 98% naturally derived, staying true to the original bottle.

Today

A renewed requirement

Shampoos and conditioners are reformulated without sulfates or silicones to fully respect the scalp and hair fiber.

Before the brand, a salon

Before becoming a brand, Mahé was first and foremost a salon. On Rue Vignon, just a stone's throw from the Madeleine, Martine Mahé opened a unique venue in the heart of Paris: the Salon Vert. Far more than a hair salon, it is a place for hair restoration where everything is designed around nature. A team of technicians provides bespoke treatments there, following a hair analysis carried out for each client. In an intimate atmosphere, filled with the scent of essential oils, she styles, listens, and cuts, unaware that a bottle is soon going to change the course of her story.

The invention

An allergy that changes everything

In the late 1970s, Martine Mahé is a young hairdresser in a major Parisian salon when a severe allergy to conventional products forces her to give up her profession. In the midst of the hippie wave, she turns to yoga, natural medicine, and dietetics. It is during a meditation course in Switzerland that she meets a chemist who will change her destiny: he gives her the exclusive formula for a herbal tincture that had never been used before. That's the turning point.

Creation

One product, almost 50 years

No henna, no ammonia, no resorcinol, no PPD, no hydrogen peroxide: a dye that betrays neither the hair, nor the skin, nor the expertise of the craft. In 1979, the first Plant-Based Dye leaves the workshop. Martine Mahé does not yet know it, but she has just invented a product that will span decades.

What the press is saying

Over the years, the brand has established itself as a benchmark in beauty and lifestyle magazines. In 2019, Paris Match hailed Teinture aux Plantes as a cult product, the only hair dye guaranteed to be free from hydrogen peroxide, ammonia, and resorcinol. Femme Actuelle, Côté Beauté, and Notre Temps regularly feature the brand's hair care products, while Avantages highlights its organic and natural credentials.

What Has Never Changed

  • The original formula

Improved but true to form: no henna, no ammonia, no resorcinol, no PPD, no hydrogen peroxide.

  • Made in France

Since the very first bottle, never outsourced.

  • Simple and clear

A formula you can read and understand.

  • A home, not a franchise

Resumption to continue a story, not to duplicate it.

The transmission

Continue, without betraying.

In 2022, Martine Mahé chose the person she entrusted with her company. Not a stranger, especially not a group, but someone she had always trusted, to ensure that this person would continue what she had built throughout her life.

We took over her standards, the name, the formulas. Times change, so do laws, and we had to reformulate the Plant-Based Dye.

We are not Martine Mahé, and we do not claim to be. But we still carry on her conviction: products without lies, without compromise on what matters. Methods evolve, the promise does not.

“ Caring without ever compromising. ”

Since 1979, a single question has guided this house. 47 years later, it is no longer a question, but a promise kept.
